Wales has launched a 1400-kilometre walking track around its dramatic coastline. The Welsh government says the Wales Coast Path makes Wales the first country to have a formal trail the whole way around its coast.

However, it is not expected that many people will complete the entire 1400 kilometres, which would take an estimated two and a half months of solid walking. The country’s tourist board, Visit Wales, hopes many visitors will incorporate a small section into their holiday plans.

“The Coast Path winds its way through towns and villages, across cliff-tops and sandy beaches, sometimes darting inland before emerging once again at a sheltered cove or tiny hamlet that you would forever miss when travelling by car, bus or train,” the organisation says.

The Wales Coast Path was created by linking existing walking tracks, such as the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path, with new sections to create a continuous trail.

The development of the track, which involved 16 local authorities and two national parks, won coastal Wales a place in Lonely Planets Top 10 Regions to Visit in 2012.

  1. Now that you can do it some folks will probably take up the challenge. Maybe after I retire… until then a portion of the trail would be fun.
